Stonewall Democratic Club Endorses Eric Garcetti

Landslide Victory for Garcetti from Leading LGBT Group

STUDIO CITY -- On Monday night, Eric Garcetti won a landslide endorsement from the Stonewall Democratic Club -- the city’s leading LGBT Democratic party organization. Garcetti won 67% of the votes, 149 out of 221. A 60% majority was needed to win the endorsement.

The Stonewall Democratic Club was established in 1975, the first “Stonewall Democratic Club” in the country established for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender individuals and straight allies committed to achieving equality for all and to advancing progressive and feminist values through the Democratic Party. Stonewall is an all-volunteer, grassroots, non-profit political organization and is among the largest Democratic Clubs in California.

"As a longtime champion for equality and LGBT rights, I'm honored to have earned the endorsement of the Stonewall Democratic Club," said Garcetti. "I will continue to fight for full equality and rights for every Angeleno and be a tireless advocate for the LGBT community."

Stephen Simon, President of Stonewall Democratic Club, said, "Eric has always been a strong leader and advocate for LGBT rights and equality. From officiating the first same gender marriage in L.A. to leading efforts to build the nation's first affordable housing for LGBT seniors, Eric has always stood with Stonewall and we urge voters to stand with him as the next mayor of Los Angeles."

Eric has been a long-time champion for equality and LGBT rights. He co-sponsored City Council action against Proposition 8 and declared NOH8 Day in the City of L.A. He helped create the LGBT subcommittee of the Domestic Violence Task Force and designated the Black Cat Bar in Silver Lake as a Historic Cultural Monument. He also spearheaded with the non-profit Gay and Lesbian Elder Housing organization the creation of the nation's first affordable housing complex for LGBT seniors, which offers more than 100 apartments, a pool, and an activity center on each floor.

Garcetti has won a broad spectrum of organizational endorsements, including from the Democratic Party of the San Fernando Valley; the California National Organization of Women (NOW); the Southern California Chapter of Americans for Democratic Action; the Los Angeles League of Conservation Voters; the North Valley Democratic Club; the Latino Democrats of the San Fernando Valley; the Mexican American Bar Association, the Latino Coalition of Los Angeles - PAC; the Teamsters Joint Council 42; the Communications Workers of America, Southern California Council; and the Engineers and Architects Association.
