More on Great Streets or "Complete Streets"

The City of Philadelphia has recently issued a draft of a "Complete Streets Design Handbook," available at I quote from the Introduction: "In 2009, Mayor Michael Nutter issued an executive order, ensuring that the City’s streets would accommodate “all users of the transportation system, be they pedestrians, bicyclists, public transit users, or motor vehicle drivers.” In doing so he made a promise that all of the City’s streets would be designed, built, and maintained as “Complete Streets.”

This was a transformational idea in Philadelphia. It would be even more so, in Los Angeles.  It would not only result in a policy document, such as the one referenced here, but it ripple through decisions regarding, spending, appointments of department heads, and the like.
