Latino Leaders Back Eric Garcetti

I am proud to announce my support for Eric Garcetti's candidacy for Mayor, and to announce a powerful list of more than 100 Latino community leaders who support Eric to lead our city.

Eric is proud of his roots and has always championed the issues that Latinos and Los Angeles care about, including education, housing and immigration reform. Now, the Latino community is stepping up for Eric in a big way. We know he will provide innovative and committed leadership to move all of L.A. forward with jobs and more responsive city services.

For me, this endorsement is personal. I know Eric will make a great mayor and it turns out that we have a shared past -- I recently discovered that our families once lived down the road from each other in Guaymas, Sonora, Mexico.

Eric’s supporters include political, cultural, non-profit, labor, media and business leaders such as:

  • Rigoberto Arrechiga - President, Mexican American Bar Association
  • Karen Avilla - President, Hispanic Elected Local Officials
  • Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante (ret.)
  • Sal Castro - Education Advocate
  • Ray Cordova - Chairman, South County Labor AFL-CIO
  • Angélina Corona - Hermandad Mexicana
  • Jorge Corralejo - Chairman & CEO, Latino Business Chamber of Greater Los Angeles
  • Jeniffer DeLara Vallejo - Director, Hispanic American Police Command Officers Association, Los Angeles Chapter
  • Moctesuma Esparza - Entertainment Executive & Community Activist
  • Alex Gallardo-Rooker - Vice Chair, California Democratic Party
  • Salma Hayek - Actress/Advocate
  • Carlos Moreno - Justice, CA Supreme Court (ret.)
  • Monica Rodriguez - President, HOPE-PAC
  • Nilza Serrano - Treasurer, HOPE-PAC
  • Esteban Torres - Member of Congress (ret.)
  • Mario Trujillo - Honor PAC Board Member/Former D.A. Candidate
  • (FULL LIST AT BOTTOM OF POST)

Eric has earned the support of these leaders through his work in our community. He recently hosted an informational workshop for nearly 500 people on the White House's new Deferred Action program. The program helps undocumented people who were brought into the United States as young children remain here and work.

He also played a key role in creating Los Angeles' Family Source Centers, which in the last year have helped more than 52,000 Angelenos find a job, obtain Earned Income Tax Credits, bank accounts, child and other tax credits, child support, childcare, utility discounts, low cost auto insurance and health insurance. The Centers' tax preparation and tax credit work helped Angelenos receive $5.5 million. There are 21 of these centers citywide, which in the last year helped almost 4,000 Angelenos earn GEDs, earn ESL certificates and improve proficiency in reading and math.

Eric has always been there for us, and now it is time for us to be there for him. I am proud to support Eric, and I encourage you to do the same by learning more about him and endorsing him today.

Thank you.

Justice Carlos Moreno

California Supreme Court (ret.)
